Who I Am: From Bushwick to Broadway and Beyond
From Hamilton to Usnavi to two albums of my own, I've moved between stage, screen and studio. Here is the short story.
Where do I come from?
I'm Anthony Ramos, born Anthony Paul Ramos Martinez on 1 November 1991 in New York City, and I grew up in Bushwick, Brooklyn, in a Puerto Rican family. I graduated from New Utrecht High School in 2009 and went on to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy on a scholarship, finishing its musical theatre programme in 2011.
How did Hamilton change things?
I originated two roles in Hamilton: John Laurens in the first act and Philip Hamilton in the second. I played them off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2015 and on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre until November 2016, and the cast recording won the 2016 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
What have I done on screen?
- She's Gotta Have It (2017–2019): Mars Blackmon in Spike Lee's Netflix series.
- A Star Is Born (2018): Ramon.
- In the Heights (2021): the lead, Usnavi de la Vega.
- Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023): Noah Diaz.
- Twisters (2024): Javi.
And the music?
After The Freedom EP in 2018, I released my debut album, The Good & The Bad, on 25 October 2019 and took it on tour across North America that November. Love and Lies followed on 25 June 2021, moving between pop, R&B and the Latin-inspired "Échale". Critics called it lighter and looser than the darker debut.
